In June 2003, PCC Natural Markets reopened its doors in the Epicenter located in the heart of the pedestrian-oriented Fremont neighborhood. The Epicenter is a mixed-use building housing retail and residential uses. In addition to the 19,500 SF leased by PCC, there are four retail spaces at street level and 130 market-rate apartments that range from studios to two bedrooms with views of the ship canal and Lake Union. The entire project sits above an underground parking garage.
The new PCC Fremont store was doubled in size and boasts organic produce, an extensive product selection, in-house bakery, outdoor seating on a south-facing patio, and a sense of community and neighborhood.
With a strong mission statement—”PCC Natural Markets provide the highest quality natural foods and products. We create and cultivate the marketplace for locally grown and organic products and are a vital community resource on food, nutrition, and environmental issues,”— the architect was driven to create a sustainable high performance design to reflect the Co-op’s values.
