Carbon4Square
Carbon4Square is a sustainability initiative challenging the Portland commercial real estate market to further reduce costs and environmental impacts associated with the region's buildings. Presented by BOMA Portland and NEEA's BetterBricks initiative, this voluntary competition will catalyze area building teams to benchmark environmental performance, analyze data, develop action plans and implement strategies that lead to greater efficiencies and reduce operating expenses. Why carbon?
Carbon can be viewed as a proxy for overall energy and environmental performance, linking various building operations - energy, water, waste and recycling, and transportation - through a common framework. Furthermore, carbon emissions and their impact on our climate continue to be a major public policy and cultural focus among the greater Portland community. As part of this community, real estate leaders recognize the business and environmental advantages of a proactive campaign directed at carbon reduction and increased efficiencies in area buildings.
What does the name "Carbon4Square" mean?
In most existing buildings, carbon emissions can be attributed to the following four categories:
Directly or indirectly, these four “squares” are the major components of a commercial office building’s “carbon footprint.” Focusing on these four categories gives participants a simple framework to assess, analyze, and prioritize strategies for overall environmental performance.
