Owner/Decision Maker
Winner - Dr. Mark Sugden, College of Southern Idaho

Title: Instructional Dean

Key Projects: Health Sciences and Human Services Building (CSI); ensures CSI creates an environment that encourages student learning and supplies the right resources to allow them the opportunity for discovering their passions and to seek fulfillment in their personal and professional lives.

Words of Wisdom: "Faculty at the College of Southern Idaho routinely challenge students to apply their knowledge when solving problems, to find accurate information when making decisions and to consider the ramifications of their decisions on others. It was most gratifying when the College decided to pursue a path that supported the educational process and demonstrated a solid commitment to the health and well being of our environment and future generations."

What the Judges Said: "It is clear that Mark cares about human health, well being and energy efficiency. He played a critical role in the success of the Health Sciences and Human Services Building and is using that project as a pedagogical tool to promote health and energy efficient living."

Finalist - Patrick Morandi, Roaring Springs Water Park

Title: Managing Partner

Key Projects: Installed Variable Frequency Drives on pump motors, resulting in a 30% reduction in power usage; placed recycling bins around the water park, resulting in a 10 percent reduction in waste to the landfill; use green cleaning products in restrooms.

Design Engineer
Winner - Kurt Lechtenberg, Musgrove Engineering, P.A.

Title: Electrical Engineering Department Manager

Key Projects: MDU/Intermountain Gas Customer Service Center (Meridian); Boise State University College of Business & Economics; Pilot Peak photovoltaic panel addition (Pilot Peak Lookout); Middleton High School; Ontario City Hall energy upgrades.

Words of Wisdom: "Many projects don't have the design or construction budgets to accommodate full sustainable design practices, but every project will benefit from a team that incorporates the basic ideas. As an electrical engineer this often means I can't incorporate the newest lighting technologies or on-site renewable energy sources, but even a basic lighting system can be energy efficient."

What the Judges Said: "Kurt aggressively pursues knowledge related to emerging green building practices and technologies while bringing his vast experience to bear in order to ensure the knowledge and techniques are appropriately applied."

Facility Manager/Operator
Winner - William Morgan, St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center

Title: Engineering Manager

Key Projects: 4,000 ton chiller replacement (St. Alphonsus); digital boiler management and burner replacement (St. Alphonsus); 1,000 ton ground water cooling system installation (St. Patrick Hospital, Missoula, Montana)

Words of Wisdom: "Healthcare has been hit with a real trifecta of expense challenges in the last few years. Changes in healthcare reimbursement have reduced incomes, fewer people have private insurance to support their healthcare needs and expenses have increased for all supplies and energy. Energy conservation not only supports fiscal responsibility, it is the right thing to do in this new economy."

What the Judges Said: "Bill has become a stand-out leader in efficient building operations and the development of long range operational planning. He brings the lesson than one person can change the approach of a large organization."

Finalist - Liz Fitzgerald and the Boise Energy Management Team, Unico Properties

Title: Property Manager

Key Projects (at US Bank Plaza): Overall energy use reduction of 14 percent due to installation of EMS system that controls after-hours HVAC; purchase of a new energy efficient 270-ton chiller; decrease in natural gas consumption with replacement of two original gas-fired boilers with high-energy efficient boilers; consistent and continual upgrades from T-12 and T-8 lighting fixtures to 2-tube T-5 fixtures

Advocate
Winner - Sharon Patterson, EcoEdge

Title: Owner

Key Advocacy: USGBC Board Chair-Idaho Chapter; developed training programs and materials for the launch of 2009 International Energy Conservation Code in Idaho and surrounding states; LEED consultant on over 20 projects in Idaho.

Words of Wisdom: "Buildings are a beautiful opportunity for creativity and for positive change that impacts all of us. Now, having worked on dozens of projects and a wide range of educational outreach programs, I realize the value of building on past successes (and failures) yet also recognize that each project is an opportunity to continually push the boundaries and explore the possibilities for greener, more energy efficient buildings."

What the Judges Said: "Sharon is the definition of an energy efficiency advocate. Her excitement and enthusiasm provides an outstanding example of leadership in the advocacy of high performance buildings."
