In January 2002, students at Maplewood K-8 Co-op and Maplewood
Center returned to school after the winter break and found a lot to be
excited about. The new 51,000 square foot, two-story K-8 school serving
450 co-op students and parents was integrated with an existing,
modernized 26,000 square foot Center that serves 50 special needs
children.
The two programs are functionally and spatially integrated, with
some Center classrooms located in the new building and some K-8
classrooms located in the renovated building. A new Parent/Community
Room accommodates Co-op program needs, fostering a higher degree of
parent participation than typical school programs.
Multiple sustainable elements were integrated into the design of the
project from the very beginning. The result is a high performance
building and site that blends into the context of the single-family
neighborhood. Design features, such as multiple gabled roofs,
articulated massing, and a façade, all create subtle links to the
surrounding community.
